My Tattoo

About two or three years ago (or less, I can't remember) I decided to finally take the step and get a tattoo. I had been wanting one for ages, I had an idea of what I wanted. I was looking for something that would represent me and my siblings ( There is three of us). A tattoo place opened up near where I lived in Madrid, so one day I decided to go in with my idea and see what they thought. I booked an appointment with a tattoo artist, she was great! Very helpful and friendly. I explained my idea and she told me about the three piece yin yang. My original idea was with roses, maybe roses and thorns or the sun and the moon, I wasn't sure because there are three of use so it was hard to find something. So when she mentioned this I was over the moon, we started talking and in the end we decided to do three roses in the shape of a three piece yin yang. I was so excited! I put down a deposit and waited a few weeks, impatiently, for her to complete the design.
After she had done the design and I had approved, I booked my tattoo day. At this point in my life, I was working all morning in a nursery and all afternoon looking after kids, so I had to book it in my lunch. As soon as I came out of work, I was off to get it done. I didn't feel nervous, I was excited and for me, that is a big thing because I absolutely hate needles. I pretty much interviewed the girl that did it for me (the same girl that designed it), I asked her so many questions and she was really nice and talkative which kept me calm. It took a while to set up, but apparently it's recommended that they set it up in front of you so that you can see that it's all clean and that you won't be exposed to an infection.
It wasn't until I heard the buzzing of the machine that I started to feel nervous. She did offer to put a numbing cream on but said it would only last for about half an hour and once it wore off the pain would be worse, that it was best to let my body face it and handle it naturally. Let me tell you this, it DOES hurt when you get a tattoo. Especially when they go over the bone. You can feel it vibrating all the way down your spine and it's not a great feeling. The girl did offer to do it in two sessions but I decided that if I didn't get it over with, it would be worse.
We got to speaking about other peoples tattoos and she kept the conversation going, also kept reminding me to breathe. It took about three hours but it was worth it.

As soon as I had finished my tattoo I had to take the little girl to a party. Which wasn't a great idea, because for some reason, I passed out at the party and ended up with all the mums around me whilst regaining consciousness. One giving me Coke, the other fanning me and one in the background asking if she should call an ambulance (she didn't). I don't know if this was from the pain, because I'm a delicate little flower, or what is was something else... I have no idea. Just take it easy after getting a tattoo I guess.

I got it done at the worst time, just before summer... I always had to have my hair tied up or it would stick to the it from the cream that you have to apply, also you have to wash it and keep it clean. You can't swim, sunbathe and it has to be covered up to avoid getting infections. If you do expose it to any sunlight, it burns like a BITCH. I had to walk around with a scarf over my shoulders covering it.
I love my tattoo and even though that day I swore I was never getting another one, I really want to get another one. I'm waiting until I'm 100% sure it's what I want, because they are for life.

A piece of art that is with you forever.
